In 2023, we started the Vinkšnupiai Manor restoration project. As we began collecting historical data, we discovered that Tatars have been present in this area since at least 1661. Additionally, we have information indicating that Tatars served as warriors in the Lithuanian army as early as the 14th century.
We quickly realized that the restoration of the mosque is not just a physical endeavor but a cultural and historical necessity. The mosque, once a vibrant center of spiritual life, stands as a testament to the enduring presence and contributions of the Tatar community in this region. By restoring the mosque alongside the manor, we aim to honor the intertwined histories of these structures and the people who built and used them.
Our project is about more than just preserving bricks and mortar; it’s about restoring a sense of identity and continuity for future generations. By bringing the Vinkšnupiai Mosque back to life, we are reaffirming the importance of religious and cultural diversity in Lithuania’s heritage.
